This Saturday, November 10, is the date of "Under the Oaks", the annual plant sale of the California Native Plant Society - San Gabriel Mountains chapter, at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center. The sale begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m. - or when we run out of plants...
At 11:00 a.m., Arlie Middlebrook will present "The Plant Community Approach to Designing Native Gardens". Arlie is the author, with Glenn Keator, of
Designing California Native Gardens: The Plant Community Approach to Artful, Ecological Gardens. She is also founder of Middlebrook Gardens, a firm specializing in ecology-based landscaping, California native plant gardening and sustainable practices in landscaping.
CNPS members get a 10% discount on all plants.
We are also having a CNPS membership drive at the plant sale. Please check your membership. If it is close to renewal time or has lapsed, this is a very good time to renew or reinstate your membership. If you are not yet a member and you sign up for a membership that day, you will be eligible for the member discount. You can also buy gift memberships, which make great gifts for others plant lovers.
We will also have copies for sale of the great new book, Care & Maintenance of Southern California Native Plant Gardens, by Bart O'Brien, Betsey Landis, and Ellen Mackey. This book has a wealth of information on caring for your native plants. It is written in English and Spanish to help you communicate these techniques with Spanish-speaking gardeners. The standard price is $29.95, plus tax. For the plant sale day only, the price will be $25.00, including sales tax. CNPS members get 10% off that price. That is a 30% reduction. Buying a gift membership also qualifies you for the special discount. This book makes a great gift, too.
We will also have CNPS-San Gabriel Mountains Chapter T-shirts and the CD-ROM Common Plants of Eaton Canyon and the San Gabriel Foothills on sale, with the same 10% discount for members.
This is a great time to get native plants for your gardens. And it is the right time to plant them, so that they will be established before the heat of the summer. There will be a free planting workshop at Eaton Canyon on Sunday, November 17, at 3:00 p.m.
