Over 60 people attend the Pasadena "San Gabriel Mountains Wilderness and Living Rivers" Campaign Launch Party
120 People Celebrate New San Gabriel Mtns. Campaign. Here's How You Can Help Out
Dear Friend of Our Forests,
Our “San Gabriel Mountains Wilderness and Living Rivers Campaign” launch parties in May were a huge success. Over 120 people attended the parties in Pasadena on May 23rd and Claremont on May 31st, which featured presentations on mountain and river issues and which offered a new vision for restoring the San Gabriel River and for protecting our undeveloped forest backcountry.
I was truly inspired by the dedication of so many people who signed-up to help protect the San Gabriels at the meetings. Now is your chance to join them. Please click here to volunteer to help out. There are many easy and fun things to do to make your voice count, from writing a letter to a key decision maker to sharing a conservation message on a hike.
City of Claremont gives Certificate of Recognition to Sierra Club in honor of new wilderness campaign
Our new campaign already has important allies. Claremont City Council member San Pedroza offered his support for the campaign at the Claremont meeting as did field representative Bill Hacket at the Pasadena meeting on behalf of Assemblyman Anthony Portantino. Representatives of Friends of the River and the National Hispanic Environmental Council also attended the launch events to offer their support.
The twin goals of the new campaign are to improve the health of our mountains and rivers as we expand the opportunities for kids, families—and everyone—to improve their own physical and spiritual health. Key campaign priorities will be to add wilderness areas and wild and scenic rivers to the Angeles and the western San Bernardino National Forests while enhancing water quality and recreational opportunities along the San Gabriel River.
Less than 20% of the Angeles and western San Bernardino National Forests-home of the San Gabriel Mountain range-is protected by official wilderness status, the gold standard of land protection that requires an act of Congress. Expanding wilderness protection is important before pristine backcountry areas fall victim to growing threats from massive power transmission lines, illegal off-road vehicle use, and even toll roads.
Please help us keep these mountains healthy and beautiful by volunteering to help the new "San Gabriel Mountains Wilderness and Living River Campaign" just click here. Thanks for caring about the future of our forests!
Best,
