Downtown Azusa is changing from a literally low-rent place into a small-scale Old Pasadena - at least, that's the vision city leaders planned to tout Saturday at an open house.
The downtown area radiating out from the intersection of Azusa Avenue and Foothill Boulevard is in the throes of redevelopment. A January council vote paved the way for the demolition of a large swath of empty buildings in the heart of downtown to make way for a three-story mixed-use building with housing on top and restaurants and shopping below.
Across the street, Azusa resident and former Old Pasadena restaurateur Sammy Zaribaf is putting the final touches on his new Italian restaurant, and there's even a rumor of a wine bar joining the block. Several other parts of downtown are likely to be spruced up or even knocked down and re-imagined in the next few years.
