More candidates file for races in Azusa, San Dimas By Alison Hewitt Staff Writer Article Launched:12/14/2006 06:49:40 PM PST
New candidates tossed their hats into the ring Wednesday for the March 6 city council races in Azusa and San Dimas.
The original deadline to file papers to run had passed in both cities, but the deadlines were extended when San Dimas Councilman F.D. "Sandy" McHenry and Azusa Councilman David Hardison decided not to run again.
In Azusa, the two new candidates were Andrea Cruz, a real estate broker, and Planning Commissioner John Dierking, who is also an attorney, said Candace Toscano, assistant city clerk.
In San Dimas, the only resident to take advantage of the extended deadline was Jesse Ash, who has run in previous elections. However, compared to his 2003 run, in which he was the only candidate challenging the incumbents, San Dimas has a wider field this year.
Mayor Curtis Morris faces two opponents, Jack Long and Earl Sounhein. Councilman John Ebiner will run for one of two council seats against Ash, Planning Commission Chairman Emmett Badar, and Public Safety Commissioner Bruce Colburn.
Azusa Mayor Diane Chagnon is being challenged by her colleague Councilman Joe Rocha. Five candidates will fight for the two council seats up for election this year: incumbent Councilman Angel Carillo faces Robert Gonzales and Uriel Macias, who both ran in 2005; excise tax auditor Edward Alvarez, and Cruz and Dierking.
