Azusa budget: Back in black Upping revenue estimates dug city out of debt By Marianne Love Staff Writer
AZUSA - For the first time in years Azusa's mid-year budget is in the black.
The City Council faced a $1.2 million mid-year budget shortfall, but during Monday's meeting the deficit was resolved with a few budget amendments that upped revenue estimates. The city now is looking at a $75,000 surplus without raising taxes or cutting jobs or services.
Mayor Diane Chagnon praised Kreimeier for his work and easily understood presentation on the budget.
"It's a great way for the community to know how their tax dollars are being spent. It also makes the City Council and staff more accountable to the public," Chagnon said.
Chagnon said the council has learned while certain revenues are earmarked for specific expenses, they also can be used in others ways.
"It frees up our general fund," she said.
The new-found money will primarily be used for code enforcement, graffiti removal and special programs.
"And, we did this without raising taxes and cutting back on jobs and hours," Chagnon said.
