Jury selection for trial to begin

AZUSA - Jury selection in the trial of Trang Dieu Luu of Azusa, who is accused of killing her roommate, is expected to begin today in Pomona Superior Court.

Opening statements by her attorney and the prosecution may start Monday.

Luu, 34, is accused of shooting to death her ex-husband's wife, Shazia Haq, 33, on Nov. 3, 2004, in the home where all three lived.

At the time, sheriff's homicide investigators called the crime a failed murder-suicide attempt.

Haq was found in an upstairs bathroom in a house on Whispering Willow Court in an upscale part of Azusa.

She had been shot in the torso serval times after an argument and died at the scene.

Authorities said the crime was motivated by jealousy.

The husband was not at home at the time of the incident.

An Azusa woman who confessed that jealousy and frustration motivated her to kill her ex-husband's new wife was found guilty of second-degree murder Wednesday.

Trang Dieu "Janet Luu," 34, was convicted of shooting Shazia Haq, 33, to death in November 2004 in the home she shared with Haq and her ex-husband Mazhar Haq. Luu faces 40 years to life in prison.

Luu ambushed Haq, 33, on Nov. 3, 2004, in an upstairs bathroom, shot her in the head and abdomen while putting her hand over the

victim's mouth to muffle the screams; she then waited hours for her husband to return home, Deputy District Attorney Ruth Low said.

Mazhar Haq and Luu were married in 1994.

The couple divorced, and he married his first cousin in 2002, telling Luu it was according to the traditions of his Pakistani homeland.

Mazhar Haq invoked his Fifth Amendment rights and did not testify. He could not be reached for comment.

Sounds like he may be getting away with something to me.

Deputy District Attorney Ruth Low said Shazia Haq's family members were not present during the trial because they couldn't get visas to enter the United States.

Low said Shazia Haq had very few friends in America and was living under untenable circumstances.

She said that Haq held a child-care job, but didn't drive and suffered beatings and humiliation at Luu's hands. Her lack of American citizenship and her culture stopped her from leaving the household, Low said.
