Historic Canyon Inn bites the dustThe property owner wants to build a deli/grocery store, a coffee shop, a regional conference center/hotel and a small performing arts theater, said property manager the Rev. Rick MacDonald of Azusa.

Funny how most of us are wanting redevelopment and then when the opportunity finally comes, some are worried about some vacant motel being torn down.
Other than for the novelty of seeing the Canyon Inn used in a few recent movies, I don't see much need for its continued existence if someone is willing to build a performing arts theater, deli and whatever else.

I didnt get the feeling Red was worried, just sharing the info. I think anything would be a benefit to us. If I had the property I would build a full service spa, theme bed & breakfast, or even wine tasting. Oh well I can dream

Rocco: The Canyon Inn was not some old vacant motel. You must be new to the area. It was a bar and a restaurant where you could cook your own steak. At one point it was a biker bar. Still I'm sorry to see the old landmark go. If it becomes a deli, the owners will probably get a license to sell beer, then people who live in the area will complain because all those people going into the canyon will stop there to buy beer. No matter what they develop there, there will always be folks who won't be happy.

Azusa 518,
What it once was, it was not slated to be again.
In one breath you romanticize its former past as a biker bar and in the next breath you worry that they may sell beer?
What difference does it make if they sell beer? The people that go up into the canyon will either buy beer there or at the Ranch Market or the liquor stores just before Sierra Madre Avenue.
Nothing is happening with that property right now, and I would welcome a performing arts theater much more than continuing to see a cute sign for what was once a biker bar.
