In its fourth year, the GATE Summer School at Azusa Pacific University is at its largest with 264 students. It's so popular, the program has a 50-kid waiting list, even after adding 100 spots this year.
High school students tackle college-level English, biology and psychology courses taught by APU professors. As long as they don't miss a day of class, students will receive three units of transferable college credit, worth about $1,500 at APU.
The classes and supplies are all free of charge to students, through a partnership between Azusa Unified and APU. The four-week program only accepts students from Azusa Unified School District in Gifted and Talented Education or the Advancement Via Individual Determination program.
