Banning Fire In Azusa Works

I realize that this is a controversial topic. I was just speaking to a friend up North in Santa Rosa. He told me that they banned fireworks and encourage the non-profits to create other types of ways to earn money. The city also encourages people to support these new efforts of these non-profits to earn money. I think that the same thing should be done in Azusa. The city should ban fireworks and it should support the non-profit organizations efforts in creating alternative ways to make money.

I realize that the city had a vote on this a few years ago but I think that if it was presented to people in this manner, that there would be a lot of support for it.

I wish that were true, but some of the folks in this town will never give it up. One of these days they'll allow fireworks on Cinco de Mayo, too.

Crackdown on illegal fireworks

Azusa police beefed up their fireworks enforcement effort over the holiday weekend, which included detectives patrolling in unmarked cars, Capt. Sam Gonzalez said in a written statement.

As a result, police issued 174 fines, including six criminal citations, and confiscated about 750 pounds of illegal fireworks, authorities said.

Acting Fire Chief Bob Garcia said no injuries were reported over the weekend.

The Azusa City Council voted Tuesday to outlaw fireworks above Sierra Madre Avenue and cut off selling "safe and sane" fireworks after 10 a.m. on July 1 through July 4.

The council will consider other measures at its Sept. 19 meeting.
