Mtn Covers, come experience the beautiful Fish Canyon Falls on Saturday April 16th from 7am-10am. This is a pristine canyon behind the property of Vulcan. However, this event is part of Duarte's annual "Wilderness Day" organized by Duarte parks and Rec. Registration is required and is limited to 300 hikers. The fee is $12 for adults and $9 for children. The fee entitles you to a shuttle ride to the original Fish Canyon trailhead from Encanto park, lunch, crafts and activities including panning for gold. There are other trailheads leading to the falls but they are very difficult for beginner to moderate hikers. For this reason, most residents are reluctant to visit the canyon which is in our backyard. For more information contact Duarte Parks and Rec at 626-357-7931. As of 4/7 they are half way to their goal of 300 hikers. This is a great family hike when allowed access through Vulcan property. Mtn Covers should see it at least once.

I'm interested.
Has anyone done this shorter hike before?
Do you think I can do this with my two year old?

I am planning to go - I called on Thursday of this week and they still had room. You have to fill out a waiver form. I will bring the backpack for my younger son (he's two as well) to ride along. See you guys there!
Mark, do you know how long the hike is?

It has been several years but I did it with my son and wife. For more info on the trail see tchester.org/sgm/trails/fish_canyon.html. I am pretty sure the trail is 5 miles roundtrip with very little elevation. Duarte parks and Rec will be open M-thurs.

Everyone who cares about our area here should attend this hike!!!!!We are your neighbors, we live next to Encanto Park, and we are forming a new group: DANORA, (Duarte/Azusa Neighborhood River Association)-please check out our website, below. Mountain Cove is in the shadow of Fish Canyon. Is everyone aware of the current proposal by the Vulcan Mining Co. to Azusa City Council to expand Vulcan's mining operation by 80 more acres into the San Gabriel mountains and canyon at Fish Canyon ?? There is a newspaper article detailing the Vulcan expansion on the DANORA website. This expansion will shear the top ridge off the mountain, causing more permanent scarring, in addition to the scarring already viewed by anyone who looks up at Fish Canyon. From the article, in addition to potential loss of property value: "A proposed excavation plan, expected to reach the Azusa City Council for approval sometime this spring, will cause noise, dust, truck traffic and health problems, they said." There is an upcoming presentation to Duarte City Council by Vulcan on April 26, 7 p.m. 1600 Huntington Dr., Duarte. Please attend if you can, it will be informative, then you could take the issue up with Azusa City Council. These two cities, and the good folk who live within, must get together on this. Also, let us know if you wish to attend our next DANORA meeting, we will email you the details. Folks, let's get together to preserve the natural beauty and protect our environment. www.danoracanyon.com
