It looks like Mountain Cove did very well under all of those storms. After looking around, I did notice major soil erosion underneath the main bridge. I’m sure that the bridge is fine but I’m wondering if the group that manages the river will look into the possibility of rebuilding the soil after the water subsides. I’m thinking that over time, if the soil is not replaced; erosion underneath the bridge will continue and could possible damage the bridge. Also, Roberts Creek encountered a lot of erosion as well. There are new cliffs in both the river and the creek that were not there before. I think that it would be wise to at least have an engineer look at these areas and determine if they should be repaired when the water subsides or if it is ok to leave them as they are.
I was surprised at how much soil erosion there was in these areas. I’m estimating that there was 10 to 15 feet deep of soil lost during this rain cycle, which is more than I would have guessed that we would have lost in 50 to 100 years. Will we lose this much soil every time we have a so called 25 year flood? And when the 100 year type flood comes, will the erosion be that much more?
