A fun event a few miles up the canyon road from Mtn Cove this weekend...
FOLLOWS CAMP, California -- On Friday and Saturday, August 6 & 7, 2004, the Go for the Gold California State Barbecue Championship will be held at Follows Camp, north of Azusa, in the San Gabriel Mountains.
The contest will include the following categories:
Chicken
Pork ribs
Pork shoulder
Beef brisket
Tri-tip
Music and activities
The weekend will include many activities in addition to the barbecue competition. There may be live music and children's activities. On Saturday evening and Sunday morning, there will be camp fires, fishing, relaxation, and lots of family-friendly fun.
Campers and visitors will enjoy a river view, fishing (bring your CA fishing license), swimming, beautiful scenery, campfires, camaraderie, gold panning, access to The Gold Mining Shop and Sedley Peck Museum, which is the oldest Surviving building in the San Gabriel Mountains.
Gold panning
Children love to learn how to pan for gold, and there is lots of gold to be found. The East Fork of the San Gabriel River runs through the middle of Follows Camp. In the 19th Century, millions of dollars of gold was found around the river, and miners are still searching for the mother lode.
Those who pan the East Fork are guaranteed to find gold -- "color" in the lingo of the miners.
Note for those who have panned for gold at places like Knotts: Follows Camp does not add gold to the river so that panners can find it. There is lots of gold in the river, and all of it is natural.
As a special treat for families with children, Marconi mining and Mr. Al Marconi at Follows Camp (an original gold-mining camp) will teach parents and their children how to pan for gold. This is a $7.00 per person activity for families with children! A real gold miner will supervise the children (children under the age of 5 must have a parent there at all times).
Safety note: During the summer, the river is a very shallow, gentle creek, not more than knee-deep in most places and not more than 30 feet wide. It is a very safe camp for all children.
