Best-selling author to speak in Azusa AZUSA -- Critically acclaimed author and poet Jimmy Santiago Baca is coming to the city Tuesday.
The native from New Mexico of Chicano and Apache descent was raised by his grandmother and later sent to an orphanage. At 13 he ran away. He spent five years in a maximum security prison and at 21 learned to read and write and found his passion for poetry.
He'll tell his story about literacy at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 213 E. Foothill Blvd. A book signing and reception will follow at 7:30 p.m. at the Azusa City Library Auditorium, 729 N. Dalton Ave. Free refreshments will be served.
Santiago's books include "A Place to Stand," "Healing Earthquakes," "C-Train and Thirteen Mexicans" and "Immigrants in Our Own Land."
