The trash collection here is pretty lousy......Athens still uses manual collection and they missed picking up my yard waste again. Even when they do pick up our trash, sometimes the trash cans aren't even emptied all the way.
Even thought the MRF system is convenient, where we don't have to separate our own recyclables, we actually pay more money for that service on our monthly bill. I think we should all be given the large 96 gallon carts for trash and yard waste that 99% of other cities have, so that it is properly emptied and the cans don't get blown halfway down the street and not to mention it looks neat and clean.

I don't think that it is up to us on which trash service we choose. I'm not about that but I think that it is a city wide issue. We pay for the trash in our bill with our water and electricty bill, so I would assume that it is a city wide issue and not just a Mountain Cove issue.
If Mountain Cove obtained it's own trash service, would we have to continue to pay for the city services?

yeah..you're right...it is a city wide issue...but all in all, in my opinion, the current system is lousy. Azusa, including mtn cove, should move to the automated trash service like the rest of the LA area.
It cuts trash costs, makes the streets look nicer on trash day, prevents animals for digging through it, and the large size cans won't roll halfway across the neighborhood. Even if you have bulky items, they will pick that up for free anyways....

I agree. We have purchased two different trash containers and after they picked up each for a few weeks they told us they were too big (96 gallons then 64 gallon). We used to live in Monrovia and they provided the trash cans it looked much nicer and it cost 1/2 what it costs here. What can we do to try to change the trash serivice?!

The trash service has been FINE! Although it would be great for the city to supply the 96 gal trash bins... The 2 smaller ones we have are great! The trash gets emptied because we do NOT stuff them packed. It's sad to hear the varying complaints for such little things. We live in a very nice place... Count your blessings!

Another satisfied customer as far as the trash service goes. I have put out things like dresser drawers and other large objects that I was worried they would leave behind, but whatever I put out has always been taken away. I have no idea what size trash cans I have, but they are the largest ones available at Home Depot and work out fine.

Man.... I wish the trash guys picked up our trash all the time. Last time they didn't get everything and I went outside to confront them... but all I saw was the back of their truck fleeing to avoid any extra work.

Our experience with trash pick up service is very unsatisfactory. I would like to see our association check if we could contract out trash pickup service, or lobby Azusa until the service improves or Azusa selects another service. We used 50-gallon trash containers for 18 months, no issues, until two months ago, when they suddenly stopped picking up our trash. My wife chased the trash truck a block before they stopped, and informed us they only pick up 32-gal containers, anything larger and they refuse! When we called Azusa Light and Water, we were informed, upon activation of utilities that everyone is informed to use 32-gal or less size containers, else they will not pick up your trash, because of the workers comp and disability claims the trash service employees have filed. My greatest surprise was being informed that Azusa tried the auto container pick up vehicles, but it was unsuccessful for Azusa. We had to purchase new containers (regulation 32-gal) as we quickly ran out of room to store our uncollected trash! My other chuckle is sometimes they pick up the cardboard boxes, and sometimes they left notes on the boxes saying we have to break apart the boxes before they are picker up. My biggest chuckle came on July 5th, a holiday, or so I thought. This was the first time I clocked the trash trucks in an out of the block faster than an athlete doing a 50 yard dash. In my block maybe two homes had their containers out, and I can still remember my neighbor across from us, dashing onto the street, holding his two containers, staring as the trash truck raced down our street and turning the corner. At least if the trash could be picked up between a one hour window each week...I'm already lowering my expectations.

Some people might like that fact that our trash service is not restricted to 2 or 3 96-gallon trash cans, but the current service is very inefficient.
The thing that irritates me the most is that every freakin trash day, all my neighbor's trash flies into my yard...and then i end up picking up other people trash. Also, when the garbage man pick up the trash manually, some of it flies out and into the street and my yard. Unfortunately, people don't always cover their trash and it blows everywhere with the wind.
When 99.9% of the cities in California use automated trash pickup, there must be a good reason. If we had the large trash containers with the attached lids, it would be so much cleaner. I wish Azusa would come into the 21st century. This city really sucks in a lot of ways!!! People are worried about bulky item pick ups, but come on...........do you really throw away desks and furniture every single week??
If you look at Monterey Park, they use Athens Disposal Automated system, but still get unlimited bulky item pick ups. And the best part about automated trash....it costs less than what we are paying.

If you look at Monterey Park, they use Athens Disposal Automated system, but still get unlimited bulky item pick ups. And the best part about automated trash....it costs less than what we are paying. That actually isn't true. Just prior to Mountain Cove's opening, the city renegotiated a contract with Athens after seeking input from residents about the trash service. The city surveyed residents offering three options. Two of them included automated pick-up (one MRF, one not), the third was the current non-automated MRF. It broke down to something like this: 40% chose the current method, 35% chose the automated MRF, and 25% chose the other automated. Now one might have construed that as that a 60% majority of Azusa residents preferred the new trash cans with automated service (I did). But former city manager Rick Cole explained to me that his office took that survery as the current MRF method being the preference. It also turned out to be less expensive, because of the recycling credits Azusa receives. I believe it was a 10-year contract that the city negotiated in 1999. So unless there's a modification of it, that contract would lapse in 5 years. From what I understand, Athens' plans include to move everything to automated from this point on. So I would start letting the city know now that when it comes time to change the service, that we want 'automated with bulky-item pick-up'.

Thank you McLite for the more valid reasoning of the trash situation. (90% of the city didn't sound correct according to Neel.)
It'll be nice to get the larger trashcans... but until then....for those that don't already do this... use the large garbage bags to toss trash into and TIE them. Use the garbage can LID too. Just do the best to deal with the situation at hand.

THE TRASH SERVICE IS EXCELLENT!!!!!!! The cities that "provide" cans restrict you to only those cans. In Pasadena trash was a nightmare. If your lids were not down, they would not pick up, if you have more trash...too bad. I had to haul extra trash to our office dumpster....If you had extra boxes to recycle...too bad...if it did not fit in the barrel...again, too bad...I am so grateful for the trash collection here...I have never! Never!! had any trash left behind....I'm sure if you call they would come back. Also in Pasadena we had to call all the time for those people to come back, and I mean all the time...
COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!!!!

To Clairfy:
(90% of the city didn't sound correct according to Neel.)
What I meant was, it appears like an overwhelming majority of cities in California use the automated system.
I never mentioned anything abotu 90% of the city of Azusa voting one way or another.

Just to let you know I have had a ton of trash every week and never is one piece left behind. You can have as many trash cans as you want....YOU ARE NOT LIMITED TO ONE CAN!!! Now In other cities with automated they will not pick up trash that is on the side nor if the lid is up and you pay extra for more that the one can that is allowed. I do not believe they will give you more than two cans and if you need a dumpster the cost was around $200-300 for a one time dump!!!!! Trash is big business..... You really should be happy with our current system....The automated system is a real pain, especially around holidays..party times, baby showers, etc.

Just a note: I have can with the hinged lid, IT DOES NOT KEEP OUT BEARS! Also where we had automated when the can goes up some stuff still flies out. I agree that we have to bag our trash because of the amount of wind we have around here. Maybe suggest to neighbors to do so because not doing so is littering... I did not realize this and had to pick up some of my trash a couple of times till I wised up, maybe they don't realize what the wind is doing. Also where we had automated they WOULD NOT PICK UP ANY BULK!!!! If it did not fit into the can with the lid DOWN. TOO BAD!!!!!!. When you have a bulky item or excessive stuff and garbage this is the best trash service I have seen. I LOVE MY TRASH SERVICE. I feel truly blessed to have this as I lived 7 years with automated and it was a mess.

OK.... We got it the first time, Island Girl. However, since you resurrected the discussion, we must be in need of a review:
As has also been said before, the trash service is something the entire city contracts and it's not set to expire for a few more years - so for now, it will stay the same. Athens is planning to phase everything over to automated, so we'll have to see what's available when contract time comes around.
And automated service doesn't mean the elimination of bulky item pick-up... Just like with today, you'd call in for bulky items. (If you don't call, the regular truck's guy calls in an order if he can't take it.) There are cities that have non-automated pick-up that DON'T offer free bulky item pickup. The service contracts are not as simple as 'one service must go with the other.'
Now can we put a fork in this one? Because I'm thinking it's done.
