Azusa `Targets' the future

AZUSA - Three little words perked up an early morning crowd inside the Azusa Women's Club recently - little red bull's-eye.
Mayor Diane Chagnon announced at the annual State of the City address Feb. 13 that Target intends to build a department store within city limits.
The announcement was one of many regarding improvements to the city made in the last year and what the future holds for the Canyon City.
For instance, the Police Department hired 11 new officers, new water reservoirs were built and traffic safety improvements are under way. All were achieved without raising taxes.
"We continue to live within our means," Chagnon said.
One of the crowning achievements for Azusa in 2006 is the increase in both graffiti abatement and arrests.
Police busted more than 110 vandals, and graffiti has been cleaned up twice as fast on average than the year before, Chagnon said.
Things are also looking up for the city's schools.
Azusa Unified School District Superintendent Cynthia Cervantes McGuire said test scores are rising and more students than before are taking Advanced Placement courses, as well as qualifying for entry into University of California or California State University schools.
"We are moving in the right direction," Cervantes McGuire said.
Among the school district's achievements in 2006 was the implementation of a bridge program that pairs incoming freshmen with senior mentors to make the transition into high school easier, Cervantes McGuire said.
