A couple residents have recently notified us that they have fallen victim to identity theft. Please make sure to keep a closer eye on your statments, and pick up your mail daily. If you are a victim, contact the credit bureaus immediately. You can ask the credit bureaus to flag your account with a "fraud alert" that asks creditors to call before opening new accounts or making changes. Ask them to provide names and telephone numbers of all creditors to check to see if any fraudulant accounts have been opened. Ask them to remove fraudulent entries from a credit report. Contact everyone who has received your credit report in the last six months to allert them of disputed or erroneous information. www.experian.comwww.equifax.comwww.transunion.comFor more inforamtion, please go to: www.consumer.gov/idtheft/

I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem. We were expecting some really important documents for our up coming cruise. We contacted the cruise line wondering why we have not gotten the documents. They varified that documents has been sent. Then we contact the carrier and they said they delivered at such and such a time and no signature was required. So that leaves me to one conclusion which I don't know if I should be? Somebody took it? This worries me...

I'm sorry to hear that another person may have fallen victim. My best guess is that if this really is a problem, the problem should die down after the builders and landscapers have left. I think that the builders are leaving this month.
If that does not work, we should seriously look into the possiblity of increasing the security options around here, whether it is patroled security cars, security guards at the gate, having double gates installed, etc.

More residents have told us that they have recently had mail stollen from them as well. I think that we need to discuss what can be done about this. I have a friend that lives in another private gated community. He told me that they just changed all of there mail boxes to locked boxes. The boxes are designed for the postal workers to be able to slide the mail through a slot, as large as a large priority envelope but you need a key to take the mail out. That might help protect our mail. I don't know what can be done about deliveries.
If we had a guard, we could have the guard hold the deliveries for the residents when they are not home.
I wonder if it would be possible to put a second gate just after the bridge, that would only let one car in at a time.
Well, I think that it is time that we have another serious discussion on what should be done about security. I don't want to live in a fortress but at the same time, I don't want to have to be concerned with people stealing from any of us either.

If you have experienced identity theft, it is very important to:
1. Contact the Post Office if your US mail has been stollen. Taking mail is a Federal Crime.
2. If you had a non United States Postal Service delivery stollen, contact the Azusa Police Station to file a report.

This was forwarded to me at the request of the writer. It just goes to show that nobody is immune to Identity Theft, one of the fastest growing areas of crime in the USA. -
P.S. There is no newsletter for July due to overwhelming personal and business commitments. The next newsletter will be in August, and will be a new scaled-down version. Thanks!
July 6, 2004 Dear Neighbor,
We are experiencing identity theft. Someone is using personal information to gain unauthorized credit and purchase merchandise.
We have placed a flag on our credit report and have filed with the Azusa police department. We thought that it would stop in the next couple of weeks. On Friday July 2, 2004, 2 large packages were delivered to our home. My husband arrived early on Friday and placed them in the house. Most likely, they were planning on picking the package up that day.
The suspect had the audacity to call our home on Saturday morning inquiring about the package. This is just too close to home.
We are asking all of you to please keep an eye out for anything suspicious. The suspect could be driving a 1995 Acura 2 door coupe (we know this because they ordered seats for the vehicle, smart!). If you see anyone around our home, who fits this description or looks suspicious, please call 911 or the Azusa police department (626) 812-3200.
We need to show them that they are messing with the wrong community. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Your Neighbor
(Their names were in the original letter. I removed them to give them some privacy.)
