For over 40 years, Azusa has had a very hard look to it. I think in order to improve the image of it, it would help if we could improve on that.
I really can't believe that they have not removed or changed that mural in the downtown with the boy that is stealing out of someones pocket on the bottom left corner. That is really not good for the city. I don't think that should represent the city. I have heard people complain about it for years but it has never been changed or removed.
Anyways, I was trying to think of some simple things that the city might be able to do. I noticed that some of the homes around the downtown are pretty nice but they need to be fixed up. And I was trying to think of ways to encourage people to look differently of that particular area to encourage people to fix them up.
One idea that I had would be to change the numbered streets to names of the best universities in the World. We could list them from South to North in alphabetical order to help people keep track of where they are within the city. I think it could help in several ways. When I look for a home to buy, I would rather buy a home that is on Harvard Drive than on 4th Street. The name would not make me buy the home but it could be one thing to help influence the decision. On top of that, I think that it is important for the children in the neighborhood to be familiar with the names of the best colleges. Parents could tell their children that they want them to work hard in school and work towards going to one of those colleges.
It would be nice if we could change the name of Angelino Street as well. It just sounds like a really rough gang like area. Whether it is or not, I don't know.
I don't know if that would really help but it could not hurt and I think that it would be worth a try. I don't think that it would cost that much to change the street names. And if it could help subconsciously influence children to work towards getting a better education as well, that would be a bonus as well.
We really need to show children that the easy way is usually not the best way. That it takes hard work and dedication to get there. They need to be familiar with the good schools and opportunities that are out there. No, I don't think that changing the street names is all that we need to do. I just think it is one thing we can do to help improve the image of the city as well as help the children become more familiar with these universities.
