Vulcan Materials Co. will hold a community meeting to discuss its plan to expand mining operations, at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Azusa Readiness Center, 1351 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Azusa.

The mining company will discuss its conditional use permit modification submission to the city of Azusa. Duarte city leaders have opposed any expansion by the company.

The Tribune had the incorrect date for the meeting, however, I was told that Vulcan has decided to have a meeting on that date as well because of the error.

No major impact on air from Azusa mining, regulators say

Officials with South Coast Air Quality Management District said an environmental report on a new mining plan in Azusa was well-prepared but needed adjustments, AQMD Executive Officer Barry Wallerstein said.

AQMD officials wanted to make sure the report had provisions that would punish Vulcan for infractions.

"We are not expecting the project to worsen air quality compared to today's air quality," Wallerstein said. "But it is predicated on having an enforceable condition that limits the amount of ... materials processed."
