Hi Folks, I haven't really decided if I'm on the no build or build side of this. I have a feeling it doesn't matter what individual residents think as eventually, it will happen because too many people, businesses, organizations will benefit from the re-opening. If you disagree, I'd love to hear why... However, please note if this highway is opened up, they (USFS) expect traffic to quadruple on the highway outside of the Cove: "Traffic volume data for the segment of SR-39 that this project proposes to rehabilitate and reopen is limited as it has been closed since 1978. In 1977, the Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) was 200 vehicles. Modeling shows that AADT will increase to 800 vehicles post-construction if the proposed project is implemented." We have to consider our quality of life here if they re-open Highway 39. How many more times are we going to have to listen to emergency vehicle sirens going up the road for more accidents. The toll is a good idea, but how about a " checkpoint" instead. If you mix four wheelers and alcohol you are going to have alot more accidents.

If they reopen 39, I'm concerned that the problems will outweigh the positive aspects of it. More noise, more traffic, more pollution, more accidents, more wear and tear on the roads, and the costs to upgrade the intersections to handle the additional traffic. People driving through the city will not necessarily translate to sales. I remember before the 210 was completed, the store owners on Foothill in the La Verne tried to slow it down because they thought that they would lose sales. What they actually found is that the people driving through the city were just driving through, not spending money. People spend money in your city when there is something that people want to come to your city to spend money on. Creating ways to drive through the city will not translate to more income for the city. It will end up costing the city in dollars and quality of life. If you want to bring more revenues to this city, find ways of bringing something to the city that people want to spend money on.
