Our daughter is due to start elementary school in another year or two and so far we're not terribly impressed with what we've seen about the Azusa Schools. Are there any good private schools in the area or are the Azusa schools better than their scores indicate?

I would recommend that you ask Barbara Dickerson for her opinon on what the school district will be like in the next year or two. She just got on the school board. I don't have her number but you may be able to speak to her directly before or after the next school board meeting. The phone number for the school district is (626) 967-6211.
In a year or two, the new elementary school in Rosedale should be open. It will be the only brand new school surrounded by brand new homes in the valley, that I know of.

I was talking to one of the neighbors about this issue yesterday. They recently were at a meeting presented by someone that reviews schools for a living. She found out that for many children in school districts like the Azusa schools can offer more for their children than sending them to a highly rated school district or even a private school.
The poorer school districts get more money per student and they are able to offer more than most other school districts because of this, that is unless the parents are paying for the extras. The Azusa school districts are also able to put your children into an environment that is more diverse.
When picking any school, it is important to go to the school and do your research. Make sure to choose your teacher each year as well. Don't say anything bad if you have not visted the school.
It also may be easier for a child to go to the college they want to by being one of the top students in the Azusa schools than to put them in a school where they could get lost in the stats.
