Azusa Police Department L.A. Fire Code Reg 6, Section C, Launching Rocket in Brush Area, Arrest and Citation Release 2004-3516 Location: San Gabriel River, south of USFS Information Booth Date/Time: Sunday, June 6, 2004, 4:16 PM Suspect: Male Juvenile, 15 While on patrol on Hwy 39, near Mt Cove, an Azusa Police Officer observed a stream of gray smoke in the air which came from the San Gabriel River bed area. The officer stopped his car and looked in the dry brush area of the river bed for the source of the rocket and possible fire. He searched the area with binoculars and saw two subjects bend down and place something on the ground, then saw red and orange flames burning. Shortly thereafter he saw what appeared to be a rocket or firework launch into the air. Additional officers, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and the Pasadena P.D. helicopter responded to the area and began a search for the suspects. After about 20 minutes a 15 year old juvenile and his father were located in the river bed. They were there with their mom and two other children. After denying involvement, the juvenile admitted to launching the rocket. A search revealed he had one more in a backpack. The juvenile was cited and released to his parents and the remaining rocket was taken as evidence. The father, mother, and juvenile were counseled about the extreme dangers of rockets or fireworks anytime in this area, but especially due to the dry summer season and increased risks during the July 4th period.
