The longest night of the year. When the sun is furthest from the celestial equator. Literally the sun appears to "stop". The end of the old. Renewal and rebirth. The beginning of new life. The sun begins its new cycle, towards longer days. The Goddess gives birth to God. The sun's rebirth, out of the Goddess. The Yule Log (Yula - the wheel of the natural cycle of life) , mistletoe and the fir tree, celebrate new life in the male divinity of the sun. Candles represent the eternal flame of life, being renewed out of the death of the old. New light enters our life, with the energies that will transform death into life.
Christianity has adopted the pagan festival of the Winter Solstice to illustrate the birth of new life, in the birth of Jesus The Transformer and The Saviour.
This "shortest day of the year" is for many people the most magical and spiritual day of the year, filled with all the possibilities that life offers its creation through rebirth.
To our brothers and sisters who celebrate today, I wish them all the joys and happiness that their new life will reveal.
