AZUSA - Artists' renderings of two proposed light-rail stations to be built over the next few years were given the once-over by community critics this week.
The two Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension stations planned are "Azusa-Alameda," on Alameda Avenue, and "Azusa-Citrus," off Citrus Avenue on the former Monrovia Nursery property. Construction is expected to start mid-2008 from Pasadena to Azusa, said Sylvia Novoa, community outreach coordinator. The light rail will eventually stretch east from Los Angeles to Montclair.
The downtown Azusa-Alameda station is next to the old Santa Fe depot and is designed to resemble the welcoming plazas of Zacatecas, its sister city in Mexico.
Artist Jose Antonio Aguirre plans to use wrought iron and concrete in his creation, mirroring the Spanish architecture of Azusa City Hall.
Artist Lynn Goodpasture's design for the Azusa-Citrus station is based on the town's history and the nursery that operated there for decades.
Goodpasture said after doing extensive research on Azusa's past, she decided to go with the California fan palm and flowers of the land as central to her design.
The decades-old palm trees lining Palm Drive and leading into the nursery property were inspirational, she said.
Four floral benches are planned, one with hyacinths, one with a sycamore, one with gardenias and the fourth with oranges and bees.
