GLENDORA - Work is under way on the $75 million Diamond Ridge retail shopping center in the south end of Glendora.
Grading of the retail center on 29 acres at Gladstone Street and Valley Center Ave. began last week and is expected to open May 2007, officials said.
About 120 people attended a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday.
The project will include 24-Hour Fitness, PetSmart, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Old Navy, Tilly's, Lane Bryant, Staples, Beverages & More, Chili's and other sit-down restaurants, along with an AMC 12-screen theater, another potential major attraction at the shopping center, officials said.
The corner property has been undeveloped for 30 years and will create several hundred new jobs in Glendora and help alleviate more than $30 million the city now has in unfunded and deferred capital improvement expenses, Glendora Mayor Gary Clifford.
Clifford said he also expects the center to bring in an estimated $1.8 million to $2 million in annual sales tax revenue and tax increment to the city coffers.
