Conservancy group garners state funds
AZUSA - About $4.6 million in state proposition money has been given to the State Resources Agency and the San Gabriel River and Mountains Conservancy to continue the city's efforts to buy land and keep it as open space. City officials voted Monday to transfer the money intended for a wilderness park on 40 acres of the former El Encanto restaurant and a nearby 1.83-acre parcel known as the Taylor property on the banks of the San Gabriel River.
The proposition money was restricted to buy open land. City officials hired a consultant to help secure the grants and paid out about $140,000 in salary, Assistant City Manager Robert Person said.
"The last two years, Suzanne Avila was paid through a grant," Person added.
The city gave up the opportunity to buy the land because of ongoing maintenance expenses and relocating 13 residents now on the properties.
