An updated project status was posted 6/30/05. Some highlights I noticed: The Tops Burger is now Sunrise Cafe?? Did they back out? Also, the Verizon tower is still in plan check - seems to be taking way too long. There is a nice drawing of the new development on the S/W corner of Azusa and Foothill. Looks like the S/E corner and Foothill Shopping Center are still stagnant projects. I'm sorry, but the pawn shop needs to go - it's going to stick out like an even bigger sore thumb once the development across the street is done. www.ci.azusa.ca.us/planning/PDFs/PS_06-30-05.pdf

The Top's Burgers that was planned in Azusa was not the same Top's Burgers that is in Pasadena. The company that was going to use that name would probably have been sued for using that name.

I really like the new design of the Save On Furniture Building. What a big difference in the image of the downtown that would make!
As for block 36, I would like to see the city look into the possibility of redesigning it into a permanant farmer's market, similar to the LA Farmer's Market at Farifax and 3rd.

What about an underground bowling alley, ground level farmers market, second story offices, and third story library? Could we also get a rotating restaurant/nightclub for the floor on the very top? And a big bookstore would be nice as well.

You know, while we are at it, how about turning the Monrovia Nursery and some of the less desirable Azusa neighborhoods into a small airport. Ontario, Burbank and LAX are a bit inconvenient for me.

I'm sorry, but the pawn shop needs to go - it's going to stick out like an even bigger sore thumb once the development across the street is done. Is there anything that we can do to help move things along? Ann, absolutely! Call your newly hired City Manager Fran Delach and tell him you want to see some traction in this project. It's going to be an uphill battle. Developers who represent the large chains (Bed Bath and Beyond, Chicks Sporting Goods, Macaroni Grill, Chili's, etc., etc.) still see Azusa as a largely poor, working class city and so they pass on development opportunities like Foothill shopping center. In some respects, I completely understand this thinking. Afterall, if it was our $5 million dollars to spend and you had five cities to consider - four of which had available commercial space just like Azusa, but had higher average household incomes, and established income-generating businesses, we would probably pass on Azusa as well! However, this is where Fran comes in. He is a professional and this is his part of his job. He and Chagnon, need to "sell" the story of Azusa to these developers. The more we convince them we want it and get involved, the better. www.ci.azusa.ca.us/Administration/index.asp

Well, if we can't get the big companies, which I'm not a big fan of anyways, why not focus on the mom & pop businesses coming in. The city should create a program to encourage small mom and pop businesses to come in. Businesses that you can't find in other locations, which could give people more reason to visit the downtown.
I like the idea of having a farmer's market like the one next to the Grove. I would go on a regular basis if we had a place like that. It would be wonderful to have such a variety of foods - greek, cajun, pizza, mexican, italian, a wine bar, bbq, fresh fruits and vegetables, a 50's diner, noodle restaurant, chinese food, sushi, seafood, brazilian, arabic, indian, italian gelato, etc.

To Rocco: Please be more descriptive on where you think the "less desirable neighborhoods" are located.

I noticed that the project report did not include all of the developments. There is that new dialysis center being developed on Azusa Avenue that I don't see mentioned in the report. Well, at least that is what I was told it was going to be. It is the building near the health center with the new windows being put in.
