Downtown Azusa is adding medical offices and other types of service oriented offices: dental offices, kidney dialysis offices, real estate offcies. I think that this is fine. It will improve the appearance of the downtown. But I still would like to see a regional shopping center in Azusa. It is retail that brings in the sales tax dollars for the city. The Foothill shopping center is not a good location for a regional shopping center. It should be a site that is viewable from the freeway and has easy access to and from it. A regional shopping center would encourage people from our city as well as other local cities to spend money in Azusa. Where could we put such a shopping center?
1. there is that lot behind Costco that is located partially in Azusa and Irwindale. This will be developed but I think that with Costco in it, it will probably be another discount center. We still could use a regional center that offers something that other centers do not have.
2. The Riverwalk idea. This would be located not far from Costco and they it may be beneficial to have a regional center near the Costco location.
3. Redeveloping the area off Azusa Avenue where the Western Motel is. The freeway off-ramp could go right into the entrance of the center. This may mean that some buildings would need to be torn down: such as the motel as well a few of the homes in that area. It would make that area look better and improve the image of the city. Because the first thing people would see in Azusa when they get off the freeway is a nice shopping center instead of a run down motel. Or what about putting a nice business hotel in that location with large and small meeting spaces.
Any ideas?
