I have another idea for the downtown.
What about if we had a permanent Farmer's Market, similar to the one on 3rd & Fairfax in Los Angeles, but on a smaller scale? It could be an open air market with small mom and pop stores with lots of tables and chairs around them on the bottom floor and offices on the second floor, with several levels of parking in the back, and lofts/condos on top of the parking. So you would have a combination of restaurants, offices and housing in one location. I think that it would be popular with residents, people working locally, and the college crowd. And having something with the right balance will help it become more sustainable and not dependant on any one thing. It would give an additional reason for people to jump off the future Gold line and visit the downtown. It would replace a run down area with something that is very nice. It would help improve the image of the city. It would be something different that other local cities in the valley do not have. It would eventually bring in a lot of tax dollars for the city. It would encourage a small town atmosphere. It would bring in more local jobs which would also encourage people to work more locally. The bike trails could also be linked up with the downtown. It will bring walking traffic into the downtown. And it could be designed to encourage the walking traffic to walk farther South, where more retail stores could be built in the future.
What do you think? I would go to it on a regular basis. And I would be willing to drive out of my way to go to it, just like I do to go to 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, Farmers Market in Los Angeles, City Walk in Universal Studios, Downtown Laguna in Laguna Beach, Old Town Pasadena, Lake shopping district in Pasadena, the Block in Orange, Main Street and also Grand Blvd in Venice, etc.
