DUARTE - Analysis of the first air samples from a Duarte station that measures emissions from Azusa's Vulcan mine revealed nothing unusual, AQMD officials said.
The readings show air in Azusa is more polluted than in Duarte, but Hogo said wind direction influences readings.
Azusa has a monitoring station that measures mine emissions daily, Hogo said, while the Duarte station takes samples every six days.
The AQMD set up the monitoring station in July at Duarte's Royal Oaks Elementary School, 2499 Royal Oaks Drive.
The site also measures naturally occurring silica particulates, or quartz. Monitoring for crystalline silica, listed under the state's Proposition 65 as a cancer-causing chemical, was recently added.
Hogo said sampling could extend beyond 2007, when it's scheduled to end.
