I know a lot of you were discussing animals in the wild you had seen. Just to let you know.. We have many humming birds, a lot of lizards, a few mice, a big possum, several squirels, rabbits, and a snake who has since died (not a rattler) These arent pets, but my kids want a dog... (not enough wild life!!)
Does anyone else have anyother wild life (four footed kind) ?

Stephen, While walking my dogs, I have come across quite a few different animals. When I first moved in nearly three years ago, it was the end of summer and my dogs and I twice encountered a rattlesnake. Fortunately, my dogs were smart enough to keep their distance. Also, when I first moved here, I went running up the street, about a mile past El Encanto, and saw a bobcat. The bobcat, unfortunately, was dead, but I was not sure until I was closer to it. Must have been hit by a car although it was not road kill or even visibly bloodied, but rather it was off to the side of the road. Just three months ago while walking my dogs, we actually came across a pack of about eight dogs that were on the opposite side of the river. These dogs were clearly on their own and not with human companions. About a month ago, one of my dogs chased a deer. At first I thought it was a deer followed by another deer, but then I realized the second "deer" was actually my dog! Most recently, two weeks ago, we came face to face with a coyote on the opposite side of the fence on the trail. It was fascinating because they coyote was so interested in my dogs (more curious than anything else) that the coyote did not even notice me. It was not until I thought my dog might find its way over to the other side of the fence that I spoke up and scared the coyote away. A fairly common sight on morning dog walks are the hares or rabbits that run from the bushes in Mountain Cove back into the river. So, in summary, there is quite a bit of wildlife around Mountain Cove. I have started walking with my digital camera around my neck in hopes of photographing something.

Last night, I was walking around 830-9pm around the trails near the top of the cove and saw for the first time an owl - he scared the daylights out of me because he was sitting on the fence (neck turned of course) staring right at me and I didn't see him until I was about 15 feet away. This owl was bigger than any I've seen before. He was about 15-18" tall and looked to be black or dark grey in color. Very cool!

Since we moved in 2 years ago I have seen bears, deer, coyotes, bobcats, rabbits, squirrels, snakes, tarantulas, owls, hawks, bats and a pack of wild dogs within one or two miles of Mountain Cove.
Yes, I do spend quite a bit of time running and cycling on the nearby trails. ;D

The animals i mentioned above were the ones on my property... while i was walking at night i saw two large toads on the bridge to the back part of the cove...
i have looked for bear and deer but havent seen any.... owls are cool.. i didnt think tarantuals made it this far north.. it's possible it was a pet of a resident that escaped....
i need to take my camera with me and post the wild life i have seen.
